Is the new Samsung cell phone really foldable
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: This is how a foldable smartphone should be
With the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung has introduced its latest foldable smartphone that actually looks modern. Here is all the information.
Samsung's first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, wasn't quite what you would expect from a modern folding phone. Sure, the technology itself was impressive, but when folded you had a small 4.6 inch display with a lot of bezel around it.
The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 on the other hand, now comes exactly as we would have all wished for the first folding smartphone from Samsung: With a large fold-out display on the inside and a large, almost borderless screen when folded. In other words: Even if you use the cell phone in its classic format, you don't have the feeling of holding an old phone bone in your hand. And all of this is also available at a price of less than 2,000 euros - more about price and availability below.
Display and design: finally a large screen on the outside too
Samsung keeps the construction of the folding phone. Means: On the inside of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 you will find the large AMOLED display with 7.6 inches and a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. On the outside, i.e. on the front in folded mode, is the 6.2-inch screen - previously it was just 4.6 inches small. There is a punch hole in the display, in which the 10 megapixel front camera is located. The punch hole can also be found in the larger of the two screens, because Samsung is saying goodbye to the notch that still existed with the Galaxy Fold.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is based on the design of the current Galaxy Note 20 series. The camera module on the back has the same look and the new color Mystic Bronze is available in addition to black. We like the design. We can only say how the device and, above all, the folding mechanism feel, once we have tested the device.
Incidentally, Samsung not only manages to make the cell phone look more modern, but also to make it thinner at the same time. The Galaxy Fold measures 17.1 millimeters at the thickest point, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 measures 16.8 millimeters.
Features of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 clamshell phone
Unfold the phone and you can continue doing what you just did on the outside screen - it's called "App Continuity". For example, you can see more map area in Google Maps or edit documents better in Word. Incidentally, the Microsoft applications such as Word, but also Powerpoint, Excel and Co. are adapted to the dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in order to work as optimally as possible with the apps.
You can display several apps on the screen at the same time and set the respective size on the screen. You can also save these apps as an "app pair" and start several apps at the same time with just one tap. You can also drag and drop files to share between apps.
Flex mode: If you only unfold the display on the inside to 90 degrees, you can put the mobile phone on the table. The mobile phone recognizes the angle and automatically adapts selected apps and divides the functions over both halves of the display. As a result, for example, a movie is shown on the upper screen, but the video controls are on the lower half. It's very convenient! With the Flex Mode you can also put your mobile phone somewhere, start the camera and film yourself. You don't need a tripod, just a shelf. Thanks to auto framing, the camera tracks your movements and shows you in focus.
When opened, there is not only the camera on the back, but the outside screen on the other half. If the camera is active, you can also have the image shown on the external display, so that the person being photographed can see themselves and adjust their facial expression or pose accordingly.
Note 20 design camera
The triple main camera has the same optics as in the Galaxy Note 20. However, the cams are not completely installed, since all three cameras in the Z Fold 2 have a maximum resolution of 12 megapixels, while the telephoto camera in the Note 20 offers 64 megapixels. A classic wide-angle cam with an optical image stabilizer, an ultra-wide-angle lens and a telephoto camera for the zoom are used.
Of course, we cannot evaluate the quality without testing the camera. However, we know from experience that Samsung cell phones are generally among the most powerful photo smartphones.
Further features of the Galaxy Z Fold 2
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is of course equipped with 5G and thus equipped for the future. The internal UFS 3.1 storage is 256 GB, with 12 GB of RAM available. Samsung installed an octa-core processor that was manufactured using the 7 nanometer process. The battery has a capacity of 4500 mAh, which is okay, although Samsung can also do more, as the newly launched Samsung Galaxy M51 with a 7,000 mAh battery impressively demonstrates.
An important feature that we would like to emphasize at this point: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 also comes with the Snapdragon 865 Plus in the version available in Germany and not with its own Exynos chip.
As with its predecessor, Samsung guarantees at least 200,000 folding processes with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The front of the device is made of Gorilla Glass Victus from Corning, the current successor to Gorilla Glass 6, which is even more resistant and better protects the display from scratches and drops. The predecessor is used on the back.
It also includes Wireless Powershare to charge other smartphones or devices wirelessly, provided they support wireless charging. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the start - on the side of the device.
