Earthly things in heaven

The Bible in the standard translation

The Gospel of John, chapter 3

The conversation with Nicodemus

John 3.1It was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leading man among the Jews.John 3.2He went to Jesus at night and said to him: Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who came from God; for no one can do the signs that you are doing unless God is with him.Joh 3,3Jesus answered him, Amen, amen, I tell you, if someone is not born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.Joh 3,4Nicodemus replied: How can a person who is already old be born? Surely he cannot go back into his mother's womb and be born a second time.Joh 3,5Jesus replied, Amen, amen, I tell you, if someone is not born of the water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.Joh 3,6What is born of the flesh is flesh; but what is born of the spirit is spirit.John 3.7Do not be surprised that I told you: you must be born again.John 3.8The wind blows where it wants; you hear its roar, but you don't know where it's coming from or where it's going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.Joh 3,9Nicodemus replied: How can this be done?John 3:10Jesus replied: You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand it?John 3:11Amen, amen, I say to you, what we know we talk about, and what we have seen we testify, and yet you do not accept our testimony.John 3:12If I have spoken to you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe when I speak to you about heavenly things?John 3:13And no one went up into heaven except the one who came down from heaven: the Son of Man..

The goal of Jesus' mission

John 3:14And as Moses exalted the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be exalted,John 3:15so that everyone who believes (in him) may have eternal life in him.John 3:16For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that whoever believes in him would not perish but have eternal life.John 3:17For God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.John 3:18Whoever believes in him will not be judged; whoever does not believe has already been judged because he did not believe in the name of the only Son of God.John 3:19For it is like this with judgment: Light came into the world, and people loved darkness more than light; for their deeds were evil.John 3:20Anyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light lest their actions be exposed.John 3:21But whoever does the truth comes to the light so that it may be revealed that his deeds are finished in God..

The Baptist and the Messiah

John 3:22Then Jesus went to Judea with his disciples. There he stayed with them and baptized.John 3:23But John also baptized at that time, namely in Aenon near Salim, because there was a lot of water there; and the people came and were baptized.John 3:24John had not yet been thrown into prison.John 3:25Then there was a dispute between John's disciples and a Jew over the question of purification.John 3:26They went to John and said to him, Rabbi, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, and of whom you have testified, is now baptizing, and everyone is running to him.John 3:27John replied: No man can take anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.John 3:28You yourself can testify to me that I said: I am not the Messiah, but only a messenger who precedes him.John 3:29Whoever has the bride is the bridegroom; but the bridegroom's friend, who stands by and hears him, is delighted at the bridegroom's voice. This joy has now become a reality for me.John 3:30It has to grow, but I have to get smaller.John 3:31He who comes from above is above all; whoever comes from the earth is earthly and speaks earthly. He who comes from heaven is above all.John 3:32He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.John 3:33Those who accept his testimony certify that God is true.John 3:34For he whom God has sent proclaims the words of God; for he gives the mind unlimited.John 3:35The father loves the son and has given everything into his hand.John 3:36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but God's wrath remains on him.
