Section 36 Brakes

Section 36 has 1 earlier version and is cited in 2 provisions

(1) 1Vehicles must have at least two brakes. 2These must be independent of one another in such a way that, in the event of malfunctions within one brake, the effectiveness of the other brake is maintained; their effectiveness must also be ensured in the event of failure of the contact line voltage.

(2) The brakes must be so constructed and, including their control devices, coordinated with one another that

1.
Vehicles and trains can be decelerated to a standstill with the least possible jolt without endangering passengers (service braking),

2.
the frictional connection between wheel and rail can be used to the extent necessary for operation,

3.
they combine braking forces and continuous performance that are adapted to the gradient conditions in the route network and the operational conditions.

(3) If one brake fails, the remaining brakes must achieve at least the mean braking decelerations according to Appendix 2, Table 1.

(4) If any electrical energy supply to the brakes fails, it must be possible to stop the vehicle at least once and secure it against rolling in accordance with Section 36 (5) at all inclines in the route network at all inclines in the route network.

(5) 1One of the brakes must be able to prevent the vehicle stationary with its payload from rolling on the greatest incline in the route network. 2This brake must work according to the spring-loaded principle; their braking force must be generated and transmitted exclusively by mechanical means.

(6) For vehicles of road-dependent railways, with the exception of company vehicles according to paragraph 7, must

1.
a brake must be independent of the frictional connection between wheel and rail,

2.
the other brakes have been supplemented by sand spreading devices,

3.
With the brakes, at least the mean braking decelerations according to Appendix 2, Table 2 can be achieved (emergency braking).

(7) 1Operating vehicles that are equipped with only one brake are allowed

1.
for independent railways a maximum of 40 km / h and

2.
with road-dependent railways a maximum of 30 km / h

drive. 2 At least the mean braking decelerations according to Appendix 2, Table 1 must be achieved.

(8) The brakes of vehicles that are operated in a train must be controlled in such a way that the train achieves the braking properties prescribed for vehicles in accordance with Paragraphs 2 to 7.

(9) In the event of unintentional train separation, at least the parts of the train not occupied by drivers must automatically brake; the train separation must be recognizable to the driver or to an occupied operating point.

(10) 1In passenger vehicles there must be facilities with which passengers can initiate braking in an emergency (passenger emergency braking). The operation of these devices must not lead to a stop on routes without a safety room and in tunnels outside stops (emergency brake override). The driver of the vehicle must be informed of the actuation of the passenger emergency brake. 4This emergency brake bridging may remain in effect on certain other sections of the route if the operations manager has introduced service instructions for this in accordance with Section 8 (2).

(11) When driving without a driver, the vehicle must be able to brake automatically to a standstill in the event of a derailment.
