English exams and which should I take?

There are many reasons to learn English. Perhaps you learn it at school, for fun, to communicate with a friend, or to help you out when you travel.

Or maybe you have more practical reasons. You might want to take a specific course at an English-speaking university or work in another country or for an international company.

An English exam degree is a test of your level and skills and is often required by an employer, school, or institution to gain admission or give you the support you need to improve.

But which one is right for you? And what test are you facing on your way?

Cambridge English qualifications

Cambridge English exams are also known as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) exams. On the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference (GER), the international standard for the description of language skills, there are different test levels. They test all four language skills: speaking, writing, reading and listening.

Cambridge English Qualifications are a mark of excellence recognized and recognized by organizations around the world as evidence of their English proficiency. The qualifications obtained are valid for life.

GER - Common European Reference

This framework has six language levels from A1 to C2, very easy to very competent.

Depending on your level in the GER, there are different tests for each level of difficulty at the school level, from college education to business education.

School-level exams

Young Learners

These are elementary level exams for elementary school students run by the school to improve the child's language skills and gradually improve their English. Every young learner receives a certificate at these levels regardless of their result. There are three levels of difficulty.

  1. Pre A1 - starter test

At this level, a young student understands basic English in children's books, songs, TV shows, and movies, and can easily interact with other children in English.

  1. A1 - moving test

At this level, the student understands basic instructions and can use simple sentences and participate in conversations with other children.

  1. A2 - flyer test

At this level, the student can use common idioms, understand simple written English, communicate in normal situations, and slowly interact with English speakers.

These exams continue a student's progress by learning English as a second language in secondary education, thereby effectively preparing for higher education. There are five levels of difficulty.

  1. A2 - key for the school test

At this level, students will be able to use common idioms, talk about themselves, understand basic written English, and interact with English speakers at an elementary level.

  1. B1 - preparatory test for schools

At this level, students can read and understand simple texts, information and articles. You can write about common topics and start expressing opinions.

  1. B2 - First test for schools

Students at this level can follow the news and radio broadcasts. You can write letters and essays that express facts, opinions, and stories. And they can easily interact on more difficult topics of conversation.

  1. C1 - Certificate in Advanced English

This exam helps students develop their skills for learning, working, and living in English-speaking countries. Many educational institutions accept this qualification as evidence of a high level of English learning.

This qualification has a level of communication equivalent to that of a professional workplace or university with a high level of language proficiency.

  1. C2 - Certificate of English proficiency

This exam shows that a student has a command of English with a high level of language proficiency, complex comprehension and oral communication. You should be able to work in a more advanced professional or management role, or to study in a postgraduate or doctoral program.

General and college exams

These exams are taken by those who have completed or are pursuing higher education, or who need to develop or demonstrate proficiency in English in a general work environment. There are five levels of these exams.

  1. A2 - Key English Test (KET)

This is the easiest of the Cambridge exams. It tests basic English skills.

It is intended for those who want to communicate in simple and common situations like introducing themselves and asking or answering basic questions and understanding slow language.

Your results will show you where to focus to keep moving forward and will show schools and employers how well you currently speak English.

  1. B1 - Preliminary English Test (PET)

This exam tests an intermediate level of English.

It is intended for those who understand and can use everyday written and spoken English and communicate in typical situations that you would encounter on a daily basis.

This test shows your current level of English. At this level, you will still find out where your strengths and weaknesses lie as you keep improving.

  1. B2 - First Certificate in English (FCE)

This exam tests a higher intermediate level of English.

It is designed for those who can understand most everyday situations, watch TV and radio programs, easily manage conversations, and write clear and detailed text.

This test shows a good command of the English language, which is required for business and educational environments.

  1. C1 - Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

This is the second highest of the Cambridge exams. Good English skills are tested.

At this level, you should be able to communicate confidently and handle most parts of everyday life with ease. You should understand faster speaking and express more complex ideas.

It is widely used for those who want to work or study abroad. Or to show the ability to develop a career that requires a high level of language skills.

  1. C2 - Certificate of English Proficiency (CPE)

This is the highest level Cambridge exam. Very good English skills are tested.

At this level, you should be almost fluent and have the ability to explain complex issues, understand fine details and deeper meanings, and communicate easily with native speakers.

This exam is taken by individuals pursuing a career in international business or those seeking a university degree in an English-speaking country. It is recognized by thousands of institutions and employers around the world.

Cambridge Business Exams

While general and higher education exams are recognized by companies around the world; Some organizations may require a more specific business English qualification that focuses on the English used in the workplace. There are three levels of Business English exams, each related to the day-to-day work tasks in a business setting.

B1 - Business Preliminary Test

This exam shows that you have mastered basic business English. At this level you should be able to talk about business topics, use graphs and charts, write simple emails, and communicate at a basic level.

B2 - Business Vantage Test (BEC Vantage)

This exam shows employers that you have the skills necessary to work in an international corporate environment. At this level, you should be able to perform more complex tasks such as writing reports, reading business articles, and attending meetings with good listening skills.

C1 - Business Higher (BEC Higher)

This exam shows that you have reached an advanced level in Business English. At this level, you have the opportunity to communicate easily and to participate fully in meetings and presentations, whereby you can express yourself fluently at a high level.

Multi-level exams

IELTS - International Language Testing System for English

The IELTS test is run by the British Council, IDP, IELTS Australia and the Cambridge ESOL exams. It is offered in over 1,600 locations in more than 140 countries.

There are two types of IELTS tests: Academic and General Education.

IELTS Academic

This is a test designed to assess the skills of non-native speakers who intend to take or attend college courses and programs in English. This is a popular test for college use with over 3 million tests being taken each year. It is widely accepted by educational institutions and scholarship programs in the admissions process.

This test is also widely accepted by employers, professional registration and certification bodies, and government agencies to assess English proficiency during the recruitment process. This qualification is also an advantage if you want to work in another country or if English is used for communication.

IELTS General Training

This test is for people who are pursuing advanced training, work experience or an apprenticeship program in an English-speaking country. It focuses on the skills required to communicate and survive in general social and business situations.

This training is required if you plan to move to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Linguaskill

Linguaskill was developed and supported as part of the Cambridge ESOL exams. There is Linguaskill for Education and Linguaskill Business as an official replacement for the BULATS exam, which will be retired soon after the end of 2019.

You may be directed to take this test by your educational institution where you are studying or are going to study, or by your employer where you work or plan to work.

These institutions and companies use this online test to check the English proficiency of individuals or candidates and to provide assistance if necessary.

Other exams

TOEFL® - Test of English as a Foreign Language

The TOEFL exam is developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which tests reading, writing, listening and speaking. Many colleges and universities with courses in English require a TOEFL qualification for the admission of international students with English as a second language.

The TOEFL qualification is preferred at universities in the US, France and Germany. There are test centers all over the world and the qualification is valid for two years.

TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language

TEFL certification is achieved through training courses offered in many countries around the world. Ratings and ratings are provided as part of the course designed by the language training institution.

TEFL certification is for those who are already fluent in English and who want to use their English skills and passion to teach others. It's often followed as a great way to travel and see the world while you work.

A TEFL certificate is often required when teaching English as a foreign language overseas or in your home country in educational institutions and language centers.

The TEFL qualification also gives you the tools and certification to teach English to students at home or online.
