Any kind of hypnosis is bad

Knowledge questions

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Generally everyone can be hypnotized. Studies have shown that ten to 15 percent are particularly suitable for hypnosis. These are not people who are gullible. First of all, it is those who have a great imagination.

For example, those who like to read books and develop the feeling of being in the middle of the action or who catch themselves stepping away from exciting films or sporting events will easily reach a state of trance.

Conversely, ten to 15 percent of all people are difficult to hypnotize - because they are skeptical, refuse hypnosis or do not allow the hypnotist's instructions.

In between there is a large midfield. Hypnosis is an option for anyone who can engage in hypnosis and is physically and mentally healthy.

But the method can usually also be implemented in the case of physical or mental disorders. However, those affected should discuss the problems carefully with the therapist beforehand. Most experts advise against psychosis, personality disorders or epilepsy, as hypnosis can exacerbate the symptoms.

How do I recognize serious hypnosis?

You can tell whether therapists are serious by their training: They should be doctors or psychologists and have completed basic psychotherapeutic training - for example in behavioral therapy, depth psychological therapy or systemic therapy. In addition, they need further training in hypnosis from one of the recognized societies, such as the Milton-Erickson Society (MEG) or the German Society for Hypnosis (DGH).

However, if the therapist or coach has only taken courses in hypnosis but has not completed any medical or psychological studies, patients should be skeptical. The same applies if the hypnotist promises great success on his website but does not provide any information about his professional career.

Patients can also pay attention to a few points when meeting the therapist: Serious therapists offer a detailed preliminary talk before starting the hypnosis. During the trance, they make sure that the other person feels comfortable. After the session, they will take enough time to clarify any questions or concerns.

Do hypnosis have side effects?

Hypnosis is clearly harmless to anyone who allows himself to be treated by a reputable therapist. In contrast to show hypnosis, therapeutic hypnosis is about working with the patient on their problems. Studies have shown that the method often brings surprising, rapid and lasting changes - and that without any negative side effects.

Hypnosis also has positive side effects: Many patients experience physical well-being in a trance state. Stress hormones decrease in hypnosis. Blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate drop and pain may decrease.

What is the cost of hypnosis?

A single hypnosis session usually costs between 80 and 120 euros per 50 minutes. Hypnosis is always a private service and is not covered by statutory health insurance.

But there are psychotherapists who integrate hypnosis into behavior therapy or depth psychological therapy. The health insurance companies cover the costs for these two types of therapy.

Important: The questions about duration and costs per session should definitely be clarified at the beginning of therapy.

Do I lose my will in a trance state?

Through stage and show hypnosis, many people think that they are switched off and controlled by others in hypnosis. In therapeutic, serious hypnosis, however, work is in no way carried out against the patient's wishes. On the contrary - he decides for himself which themes and images to come up with.

This makes it impossible to hypnotize someone against their will or against their own values. The human psyche has natural protective mechanisms. These become active immediately when the hypnotized person senses that something is happening against his values and his will.

Conclusion: Hypnosis does not make you mindless. Good therapists even help you regain more willpower over yourself by mobilizing forces during the trance and evoking strengthening memories.

Can i stop anytime?

Many people are afraid of being at the mercy of the hypnotist, of not being able to stop the hypnosis or of not being able to wake up at all. However, the opposite is the case: Even in deep trance states, we can get out at any time. Since hypnosis is only a form of relaxation and not deep sleep, we will wake up again in any case.

Can I remember everything afterwards?

Anyone who finishes a hypnosis session remembers everything. Since we are fully conscious in a trance state, we notice everything and know afterwards exactly which suggestions the therapist gave us, which images we saw in front of our inner eye and what we ourselves said.
